Kenneth Ize was born in Lagos and moved to Vienna as a teenager, later enrolling at the University of Applied Arts Vienna to study fashion, a training path that gave him a dual Nigerian-Austrian perspective on design. During his studies, Ize grew fascinated with aso-oke, the handwoven Yoruba textile he remembered from childhood, and made it his personal mission to work directly with the weavers producing it in Nigeria rather than outsourcing that craft. He has described wanting to give the artisans he works with visible credit and fair compensation, treating them as collaborators rather than anonymous suppliers. This hands-on, relationship-driven approach shaped his identity as a designer who moves between two worlds, translating an endangered craft tradition into a language legible on European runways. His 2019 LVMH Prize finalist placement and Arise Fashion Week Designer of the Year award marked personal turning points, propelling him from a promising graduate to one of the few Nigerian-trained designers with a standing Paris Fashion Week presence, while he has continued to base much of his production and creative process in Nigeria itself.
