Adeju Thompson founded Lagos Space Programme out of a deeply personal interest in aso-oke weaving and in questioning the gender binaries Thompson felt were imposed on Nigerian dress. Rather than working from an existing pattern archive, Thompson chose to learn directly from artisan weavers, treating the weaving relationship as core to a personal creative process rather than a background supply arrangement. Thompson has spoken openly about using the label to explore Yoruba spirituality and queerness, making the brand as much a vehicle for personal identity exploration as a commercial fashion venture. This candor about identity and craft set Thompson apart within Nigerian fashion, where such explicit engagement with gender fluidity remained relatively rare. Becoming an LVMH Prize finalist marked a significant personal milestone, validating years of independent, artisan-led experimentation on an international stage typically dominated by designers trained within established European fashion houses. Thompson has continued to be interviewed extensively about the personal and cultural motivations behind the label’s aesthetic choices, positioning Thompson as one of the more introspective, narrative-driven voices among contemporary Nigerian designers.
