BACKGROUND

Iké Udé is a prominent Nigerian-American multimedia artist, photographer, author, publisher, and style icon based in New York City. Born in Nigeria in 1964, he is widely celebrated as a master of conceptual portraiture and a leading figure in the global exploration of “Black Dandyism,” fashion, and cultural identity.

BRAND OVERVIEW

Udé transitioned from painting to photography in the 1990s. He gained mainstream recognition with his provocative 1994 Cover Girls series, where he photographed himself in various styled personas to critique the fashion industry’s lack of diversity and its consumerist fetishes. One of his most defining bodies of work is Nollywood Portraits: A Radical Beauty, which celebrates the visionaries of the Nigerian film industry. His monumental piece The School of Nollywood reinterprets Raphael’s Renaissance masterpiece The School of Athens using iconic Nigerian film stars like Genevieve Nnaji.
